Concert by the indie rock and pop-country project Hovvdy, with support from singer-songwriter Christian Lee Hutson.
Hovvdy play The First Unitarian Church on Tuesday, November 3, with Christian Lee Hutson opening. Hovvdy is the project of Will Taylor and Charlie Martin, and they've been a presence in the indie scene for more than a decade. They started out in Austin, Texas, playing understated slowcore, and have since put out five studio albums. Over those records, they've built a sound that blends twangy indie rock, 2000s-inspired pop-country, and emotional acoustic ballads, all held together by a strong pop sensibility.
Their more recent work shows how they've moved through different moods. True Love, from 2021, was a record of declarations of love; their self-titled album dealt with loss and personal change; and their latest, Big World, trades that kind of emotional directness for more enigmatic subject matter. Between the two of them, Taylor and Martin have spent ten years working their way from those quiet beginnings in Texas to where they are now.
Opening the night is Los Angeles singer-songwriter Christian Lee Hutson. His albums Beginners (2020) and Quitters (2022) brought him international attention from Pitchfork, the Guardian, and No Depression. He recorded Paradise Pop. 10 at Figure 8 Studio in Brooklyn with four-time Grammy winner Phoebe Bridgers, producer Marshall Vore, and engineer Joseph Lorge; Maya Hawke co-wrote and sang harmony on the track "Carousel Horses."
