Return show by the riot grrrl punk project heavens to betsy, with Calamity Jane, at the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia.
heavens to betsy play The First Unitarian Church on Sunday, November 1, with Calamity Jane opening. It's a return for the band, whose recording career spanned a few years in the early nineties.
heavens to betsy was the DIY punk project Corin Tucker and Tracy Sawyer started during the riot grrrl halcyon days, when they were among the Olympia artists in Bikini Kill, Team Dresch and Bratmobile. The two grew up together in Eugene, Oregon, and formed the band after Tucker moved to Olympia; their first performance came at the International Pop Underground convention's Girl Night, before they became one of the movement's defining voices. Between 1992 and 1994 they released three 7" records and the full-length Calculated via Kill Rock Stars, tackling subjects rarely addressed in punk at the time: rape culture, body image, queerness, friendship and intersectional politics. The show is billed as a notable return for the band, whose influential output left its mark on 1990s indie rock.
