Mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade joins a cast of vocalists from the Met Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program for a journey through Romantic and Impressionist music, accompanied by Myra Huang and Ken Noda.
Frederica von Stade is performing at the Perelman Theater on Friday, November 20, and she's bringing a full cast with her. The New York Times once called her "one of America's finest artists and singers," and that's the name on the marquee for this one. She'll be joined by soprano Jazmine Saunders, tenor Jonghyun Park, and baritone Yeongtaek Yang—all of them from the Met Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program—so it's a mix of an established star and some of the newer voices coming out of the Met.
The program takes a long look at the height of Romanticism and Impressionism, and it starts with a bit of a twist: Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, arranged for piano four-hands. After that, the evening moves into songs by Chaminade, Hahn, Robert Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Schubert. It's a wide sweep of the era, with the French Impressionists and the German Romantics sharing the same bill.
Two pianists, Myra Huang and Ken Noda, will be accompanying the singers throughout the night. They're both cited as two of today's most sought-after interpreters of the vocal repertoire, and since the evening opens with a four-hand piano arrangement, they'll be doing more than just keeping time—they're part of the ensemble.
