A special double bill of Penn Live Arts: Arun Ramamurthy Trio and Rudresh Mahanthappa Hero Trio, part of the Arts of India Festival.
Arun Ramamurthy Trio and the Rudresh Mahanthappa Hero Trio play a double bill at Zellerbach Theatre on Friday, October 30, as part of the Arts of India Festival. It's a Penn Live Arts presentation, co-presented with Sruti, The India Music & Dance Society of Philadelphia, with lead support from the William Penn Foundation.
Violinist Arun Ramamurthy opens the night. His trio blends jazz with South Indian Carnatic traditions, and the set draws from his latest album, New Moon, alongside original and reimagined Carnatic repertoire. He's followed by the Rudresh Mahanthappa Hero Trio, led by Mahanthappa, an alto saxophonist who has topped DownBeat's critics' polls for eight years. His set brings bold reinterpretations of jazz classics and an eclectic mix of songs from across the musical landscape.
Before the music starts, the two leaders sit down for a pre-performance conversation moderated by Suzanne Cloud, part of the ListenHear series. It's a chance to hear them talk through their work before they take the stage.
