WhatNot Theatre's puppetry retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Fir Tree' for children aged 2 and up.
WhatNot Theatre bring The Littlest Fir Tree to Pegasus Theatre on Sunday 22 November, a puppetry retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Fir Tree for children aged 2-7. It's a heart-warming one, and the puppetry is front and centre throughout.
The story follows a tiny fir tree who longs to be chosen as a beloved Christmas tree. On a frosty winter's eve, a spider spins a shimmering web across his branches, and a moved villager carries him home, where his Christmas wish finally comes true. It's a simple, sweet tale, and the production brings it to life with original music and audience interaction, so the kids get to be part of the storytelling rather than just watching from their seats.
WhatNot Theatre is an Oxford-based, female-led company founded in 2018 that specialises in early years, children's and family theatre. They describe their work as blending gentle participation, storytelling and a bit of silliness to encourage children and families to connect, which is exactly the kind of thing that works for this age group. The show is recommended for ages 2 and up, so it's one of those outings that works as well for a toddler as it does for a seven-year-old.
