Award-winning improvised musical comedy in which the cast builds a show from scratch using audience suggestions for the setting and musical styles.
Showstopper! The Improvised Musical comes to the Oxford Playhouse on Friday 8 January 2027, starting at 7:30pm. It's an improvised musical comedy that arrives direct from the West End, and the whole thing is built from scratch during the performance.
The way it works is pretty straightforward: the cast takes suggestions from the audience for the setting and the musical styles, and they turn them into storylines, characters, and full song-and-dance numbers on the spot. The audience also gets to name the night's show, so you're effectively helping to write the thing as it happens. It's a bit of a gamble, but that's the point — no two nights are the same.
There's a fair bit of history behind it. The show won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment and Family Show in 2016 and since then it's become an Edinburgh Fringe phenomenon, spawning a BBC Radio 4 series and a critically acclaimed West End run. It's part of an archive of more than 1,200 shows performed since the company started in 2008, and the range is wide: they've done everything from a Broadway barnstormer and sophisticated Sondheim to settings in an American high school, ancient Egypt, or a coffee shop. The critics have been kind, too — the Daily Telegraph called it 'so polished, it defies belief', The Times gave it four stars, and Time Out called it 'achingly funny'.
