Hands-on science workshop for children aged 5 to 9 to investigate bones and bodies and make a moving model arm.
Science Oxford Centre is running its monthly Science Club on Saturday 24 October, and this time the theme is skeletons. It's a hands-on workshop for children aged 5 to 9, led by the centre's club leaders, and it's part of their Family Days, so it's designed for kids to work through with an adult by their side.
The session is built around bones and bodies, and the kids move through a few different activities. They start by piecing together a skeleton jigsaw, then build a K'Nex skeleton to protect balloon lungs, and make a bone model from play dough, straws and card. The main thing they'll take home is a Dr Frankenstein moving model arm, which they put together using rubber bands after experimenting with how movement and muscles actually work. It's a good mix of assembling things and then seeing how they function, rather than just listening to someone talk about it.
There are three sessions to choose from: 10am–11.30am, 12.30pm–2pm and 3pm–4.30pm. The centre itself is open from 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4.30pm, so you can make a proper day of it. The woodland, Water Lab and outdoor areas stay open throughout, and the café runs alongside, which is handy if you're staying between sessions or just want a coffee while the kids are busy.
