Nature club session for children aged 5-9 to explore bats, with activities like examining bat bones, a blindfolded echolocation game and making bat masks.
Brilliant Bats is the next session of the Nature Club at Science Oxford Centre on Saturday 14 November, and it's exactly what the club does best: taking a single animal and spending a morning getting properly stuck into it. The session is for children aged 5 to 9, and it's run in three separate slots throughout the day — 10.00am to 11.30am, 12.30pm to 2.00pm, and 3.00pm to 4.30pm — so you can pick the one that fits your Saturday.
It's a mix of looking and doing. The kids get to examine bat bones alongside a skeleton X-ray, and they'll head out into the woodland to spot bat boxes. The highlight is the 'bat game', which teaches echolocation: you're blindfolded and have to use your voice and ears to avoid obstacles and move towards prey, just like a bat does in the dark. There's a making side to it too, with kids colouring and cutting out a bat mask or a flapping paper bat to take home.
It's part of Science Oxford's Nature Club, a monthly indoor-outdoor workshop for 5- to 9-year-olds that runs through the winter months, with a different theme each week. The sessions are led by expert club leaders in the centre's workshop space. Beyond this, the centre runs regular Saturday STEM Clubs for the same age group, covering everything from coding and crafting to investigating and inventing. They're also committed to inclusion, working with schools and community groups to provide funded places.
