A show of live music, narration and archive footage celebrating the history of Ronnie Scott's jazz club and the artists who played there.
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club brings The Ronnie Scott's Soho Songbook to the Oxford Playhouse on Saturday 27 March 2027, starting at 7:30pm on the main stage. It's a new production that combines live music, narration and projected archive images and footage to trace the club's history from its beginnings as a basement music bar where musicians would jam to its status as an internationally acclaimed venue.
That history is a long list of names. The show looks back at landmark performances by Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Michael BublƩ, and mentions surprise appearances by Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder and Prince. The live music on stage is paired with narration and rare archive footage, so you're hearing the jazz greats who played there while seeing the club's story unfold on screen. It runs for around two hours with an interval.
The production has picked up some good reviews along the way. The Observer called the performers 'outstanding', The Guardian described the show as 'full-on brilliance' and Jazzwise said it marries vision and sound. If you're into jazz, it's a chance to see the club's legacy laid out in one go, from the early jam sessions to the big names that eventually made it famous.
