Free 24-hour poppy trail marking the homes of the 42 men from South Oxford who died in the Second World War.
Poppy trail for the 42 Men of South Oxford 1939-45 runs from Sunday 1 November to Monday 30 November, across the streets of South Oxford from Folly Bridge to Donnington Bridge. It's an open-air commemoration of more than 40 local men from Grandpont, New Hinksey and Cold Harbour who died serving in the Second World War. Their names appear on the memorials of the area's two Anglican parish churches: St Matthew's, covering Grandpont and Cold Harbour, and St John the Evangelist, covering New Hinksey.
A group of local volunteers spent time researching the men's backgrounds, their lives in Oxford and how they died at war. The trail is part of the commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the end of the conflict. Each man is remembered with an information sheet placed in front of the house where he lived, decorated with a poppy. You can follow every single address if you've got the time, or just stop and read one or two as you pass through the neighbourhood.

Because it's out on the streets, it's accessible 24 hours a day throughout the month, so you can fit it in whenever suits you. A trail map and a list of addresses are available to download, which is handy if you want to plan a proper walk of it rather than just bumping into the sheets by chance. It's free to visit.
