The Orchestra of St John's, with OSJ Voices and soloists, performs Handel's Messiah in the historic Sheldonian Theatre.
Orchestra of St John's are bringing Handel's Messiah to the Sheldonian Theatre on Sunday 20 December, from 7:30pm to 10:00pm. It's a full run of the piece, from the quiet beauty of the opening through to the 'Hallelujah' chorus, performed in its traditional scoring. The night is built around the moments of drama, joy and sublime beauty that make it such a well-known work.
On stage, the Orchestra of St John's (OSJ) is joined by OSJ Voices and four soloists: Hannah Davey on soprano, Charlie Tetley on alto, Gareth Edmunds on tenor and Frazer Scott on bass, with John Lubbock conducting. It's a large ensemble for a single evening, and the Sheldonian, one of Oxford's most spectacular historic settings, fits the scale of it. The performance runs for two and a half hours, so you'll have the whole thing in one sitting.
There's a bit more to the ensemble than just the music on the night. The Orchestra of St John's is a community choir and orchestra that takes classical music out into the community and works with children in special educational needs schools. When you book, they ask for a voluntary donation to support that work, so your ticket goes toward more than just the concert itself.
