Northern Ballet's adventurous reimagining of the classic Robin Hood tale, with storytelling, ballet and live music.
Northern Ballet bring Robin Hood to the Oxford Playhouse on Monday 5 April 2027. It's a reimagining of the classic tale, and the company describes it as an adventurous retelling in which friendship, bravery and fighting for fairness lead the way.
What sets this one apart from a standard ballet is how it's put together. It's not just dance; it's a combination of storytelling, ballet and live music, so the narrative is carried by more than just the movement on stage. The live music adds another layer to the whole thing, giving the performance a different energy than if it were running to a recording.
As for the story, it's the one you know: Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men in Sherwood Forest, taking from the rich to give to the poor. Northern Ballet's version leans into the more spirited side of that, with the company framing it as a story about friendship and standing up for what's fair. It's a familiar tale, but told through dance and live music, so it'll feel different from any version you've seen before.
