One-day practical workshop led by artist and art historian Martin Beek on Matisse's paper cut-out techniques, inspired by the Ashmolean's 'Aphrodite' exhibition.
Martin Beek is leading a one-day paper-cut collage workshop at the Ashmolean Museum on Saturday 14 November, from 10.30am to 4pm. It's held in the Ashmolean Learning Studio on Beaumont Street, and it's built around the museum's Aphrodite: The Making of a Goddess exhibition.
The session takes its cue from Henri Matisse's cut-out techniques, the way he worked with paper towards the end of his life. Beek, who is both an artist and an art historian, opens with a short presentation on how Matisse reimagined the human figure and the practical ways he went about it. From there, you'll spend the day making your own collages, drawing from the museum's classical sculptures, casts and a live model. All the materials are provided, so you just need to turn up.
It's part of the Ashmolean's Love & Legacy season, a programme of talks, workshops and events exploring how ideas, traditions and practices have been shared through art and culture across generations, linking the museum's collections to the Aphrodite exhibition. The workshop sits right in the middle of that, taking a classical subject — the human body — and working it through a modern technique.
