First UK and Ireland tour of the eight-time Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown, with five performances at the New Theatre Oxford.
Hadestown is coming to the New Theatre Oxford from 19 to 23 October 2027, five performances in total. It's the show's first ever UK and Ireland tour, so this is the first time it's played on this side of the Atlantic.
The musical was conceived by indie-folk singer-songwriter AnaΓ―s Mitchell and developed with director Rachel Chavkin, who also helmed Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. It fuses Greek mythology with Mitchell's concept album of the same name, intertwining two mythic love stories: that of the young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone. The setting is an industrial underworld akin to the New Orleans scene, and the music blends modern American folk with New Orleans-inspired trad jazz.
It's an eight-time Tony Award winner, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, and took Best Musical Theatre Album at the 2020 Grammys. It first staged at the New York Theatre Workshop, has since been seen by over six million people and streamed by nearly a billion, and the Original Broadway Cast Recording is one of the most streamed cast albums of all time. The Oxford dates are part of the show's first tour of the UK and Ireland.
