Northern Ballet's Nutcracker reimagined as a fulldome immersive film with dancers filmed on stage, surrounded by 360-degree screens and Tchaikovsky's score in surround sound.
Clara & The Nutcracker runs at the Schwarzman Centre from 10 to 24 December, the centre's first festive production. It's not a stage show in the usual sense: you sit in reclining chairs inside a 360-degree dome, with Northern Ballet dancers filmed on stage, in the studio and behind the scenes, mixed with animated fantasy scenes and Tchaikovsky's score in surround sound. The whole thing is a fulldome immersive film, so you're looking up and around rather than straight ahead.
It follows Northern Ballet dancer Rachael Gillespie as she transforms into the ballet's heroine, Clara, and takes its choreography, costumes and sets from David Nixon CBE's production of The Nutcracker. The dancers are Northern Ballet's own, with Nixon's original choreography and additional movement directed by Gavin McCaig. Janire Najera directed the film, and the music is Tchaikovsky's score performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra, recorded at Maida Vale Studios.
University of Oxford academics helped shape the piece: E.T.A. Hoffmann scholar Joanna Neilly guided the story, Philip Bullock led the work on the score, and Meindert Peters contributed to the movement and storytelling. It's billed as a production for everyone from families and dance newcomers to seasoned culture-goers.
