University of Oxford student company Crazy Child Productions stages Cy Coleman's Tony Award-winning musical about Hollywood, recommended for ages 14 and over.
City of Angels runs at the Oxford Playhouse from Wednesday 3 to Saturday 6 February, put on by the University of Oxford student company Crazy Child Productions and directed by Magdalena Lacey-Hughes. It's a musical with a book by Larry Gelbart, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by David Zippel, and it's built around Coleman's Tony Award-winning jazz score.
The story is set in the Golden Age of Hollywood and follows Stine, a successful novelist whose latest book is being adapted for the silver screen. As the production takes shape, the line between the writer and his creation begins to blur in a way that gets dangerous. It's a love letter to cinema that moves between razor-sharp comedy, gripping noir and Hollywood glamour, with the jazz score driving the whole thing.
It's not a new piece. It originally premiered on Broadway at the Virginia Theatre in 1989, where it won six Tony Awards including Best Musical, before transferring to the West End in 1993. It returned to the West End in 2014 and picked up the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. This production brings that history to the Playhouse, with the student company taking on a show that's worked its way through Broadway and the West End over the last few decades.
