The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Marios Papadopoulos, plays Beethoven's Choral Fantasy with Sir Bryn Terfel and the Philharmonischer Chor der Stadt Bonn.
The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra are at the Sheldonian Theatre on Thursday 6 May 2027, with Sir Bryn Terfel joining them for Beethoven's Choral Symphony. It's part of the orchestra's 2026-27 season, led by Music Director Marios Papadopoulos, and falls under the Ertegun Series, which is sponsored by The Ioana Maria Banu Ertegun Trust.
On the night, the orchestra is joined by the Philharmonischer Chor der Stadt Bonn, who've come over from Germany to mark the 80th anniversary of the twinning of Bonn and Oxford. The programme features Beethoven's Choral Fantasy, Op. 80, and the performance is billed to transfer to Carnegie Hall in New York afterwards.
It's a big moment in a wider season that the orchestra is calling its most ambitious to date. This one is launching Oxford International Opera, with Sir Bryn Terfel as Artistic Director, and the Oxford Beethoven Festival 2027, which marks 200 years since Beethoven's death. The Philharmonic itself was founded in 1998 and has shared stages with Martha Argerich, Maxim Vengerov, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Evgeny Kissin, while keeping its heart in Oxford, home of the Oxford Piano Festival.
