One-day empowerment workshop for girls aged 11-16 with hip hop dance, personal safety, yoga and wellbeing activities.
Body Politic Dance are running DefendHER at Barton Park Primary School on Friday 30 October, a one-day workshop for girls aged 11 to 16. It's built around the tagline 'Move Strong. Feel Powerful. Belong.', and they describe it as a day of movement, learning and connection. The idea is to help young women build confidence in their bodies, pick up practical skills, support their wellbeing and connect with other young women in their community.
It's a full day, not a single class, and the programme pulls together a few different things. There are hip hop dance workshops, personal safety and self-protection, specialist guest talks, yoga and wellbeing activities, and creative sessions and discussions. The dance is the main thread, but the safety and wellbeing bits run alongside it, so it's as much about what happens off the dance floor as what happens on it. The whole thing is aimed at girls in that 11-16 age bracket, so it's designed for that specific transition from primary to secondary school and beyond.

It runs from 10.00am to 4.00pm at Barton Park Primary School on Barton Fields Road in Headington, OX3 9WN. Places cost £20, but there are fully funded spaces available if that's a barrier, so it's open to more than just those who can pay. Spaces are limited and you have to book in advance, so it's worth getting on it early if you're planning to go.
