Free public talk with historian Pamela Roberts to launch the new edition of her book on Oxford's black scholars, with a heritage bus tour of the city.
Pamela Roberts is launching a new edition of Black Oxford: Untold Stories of Oxford University's Black Scholars on Saturday 7 November, and she's doing it with a bus tour and a talk. The book looks at the black scholars who've come through the university over the years, and the new edition comes as Roberts' research has continued to bring new stories to light.
It's a broad sweep of history. She revisits figures like Christian Frederick Cole, Britain's first black barrister, and Alain LeRoy Locke, the intellectual architect of the Harlem Renaissance, while bringing new attention to African and African-American women, the Windrush generation, and the black scholars and leaders who've followed. Roberts runs Black Oxford Untold Stories, a cultural platform that documents these histories through books, heritage experiences, talks, exhibitions, film, and other creative projects. She's worked with the Bodleian Libraries for a long time, and previously partnered with City Sightseeing Oxford to create the city's first black heritage guided bus tours, which you can still book for private hire year-round.
