Exhibition at the Ashmolean that uses jewellery, weapons and archaeological finds to tell the story of Anglo-Saxon England.
Anglo-Saxon England: Treasures, Trade & Travel opens at the Ashmolean Museum on 3 December 2027. It's a major exhibition that looks at the early centuries of England, and the way it tells the story is through the things people left behind: jewellery, weapons, and archaeological finds. The focus is on the material culture of the period, so you'll be seeing the actual objects that defined daily life and status back then.
What the Ashmolean is aiming for here is a bit of a rethink of England's origins. The exhibition is presented as shedding new light on the country's beginnings, and it does that by drawing on the latest archaeological discoveries and research. Rather than just a collection of old things, it's built around the idea of an interconnected society — the trade and travel that linked these early communities together, rather than seeing them as isolated pockets. The jewellery and weapons are the evidence for that, showing the reach of the networks they lived and worked within.
