Stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's novel, presented by Birmingham Rep on its 2027 national tour, set in war-torn 1992 Afghanistan.
A Thousand Splendid Suns comes to the Oxford Playhouse from 19 to 24 April 2027, as part of a 13-venue national tour presented by Birmingham Rep. It's a stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's international best-seller, which has sold over 38 million copies.
The story is set in 1992, in an Afghanistan ravaged by war. It follows Mariam, who is sent to Kabul at fifteen to marry Rasheed, and Laila, orphaned a generation later and taken as Rasheed's second wife while pregnant, leaving her with no choice but to accept her younger rival. As the Taliban take over, the two women become unlikely allies in a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. It's a story of three generations of women finding strength in unity.
Ursula Rani Sarma adapted the book for the stage, and Kimberley Sykes directed the production, with set and costume design by Simon Kenny. Rina Fatania reprises her role as Mariam. The play originally opened at Birmingham Rep in 2025 to packed houses, and Sykes says the piece feels more urgent than ever, five years into the Taliban's current rule.
