Phil Hoyles impersonates Tommy Cooper in a tribute show of his jokes, songs and magic at Nottingham Arts Theatre.
Phil Hoyles is taking on the role of Tommy Cooper at Nottingham Arts Theatre on Friday 20 November, in a show called Have I Got Time For More?. It's a brand-new production from Cattle Productions Ltd, the team behind the Steptoe & Son revival, and Hoyles is billed as the UK's number one impersonator. He'll be recreating Cooper's jokes, songs and gloriously failed magic, with the theatre noting he's got the height, the laugh and the fez to match.
It's a production that leans on Cattle Productions' reputation for reviving and recreating classic comedy, and it's not just about the laughs — part of the proceeds go to Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes, a local charity that helps get blood and urgent medical supplies to hospitals across the county. So there's a bit of local good coming out of the night as well.
If you're wondering how close it gets to the real thing, The Stage called the portrayal 'a carbon copy in look, voice and humour' and 'as near to the genuine article as you can get'. It's a full evening of the kind of thing Cooper was known for: the bad magic, the timing, and the fez.
