Shakespeare's bloodiest revenge tragedy, directed by Clare Choubey, at the independent Lace Market Theatre.
Lace Market Theatre is putting on Titus Andronicus from Monday 26 October to Saturday 31 October, so it's running across the whole week. It's Shakespeare's bloodiest play, and it doesn't hold back: the plot follows the general Titus Andronicus, who returns to Rome after ten years of war having lost twenty-one of his sons to victory over the Goths. He finds himself ill-equipped for the treacherous political atmosphere of an empire teetering on decline, and his decision to sacrifice his defeated enemy's eldest son sparks a brutal vendetta with Tamora, Queen of the Goths, that reaches an extraordinary climax of bloodshed. The production describes it as a savage indictment of misogyny and racism, and a devastating portrayal of the destructive capacity and ultimate futility of vengeance.
Fair warning on the content: the play contains portrayals of violence including murder, mutilation and cannibalism, and references to rape. It's not one for the faint-hearted, so keep that in mind before you book.
Clare Choubey directs, and the cast is a large one. Paul Spruce takes the title role of Titus, with Jennifer Foley as Tamora and Gavin Gordon as Aaron. Louise Wiseman plays Marcia, Chloe Martin is Lavinia, and Jack Leo is Saturninus. Natalie Webster plays Lucia, George Eustace is Demetrius, and Dan Blurton takes Chiron. Jake Turner doubles up as Bassianus, Pablius and a Guard; Charmaine Mayeto-Medina plays Martius and Young Lucius; Sarah Godwin is Quintus, the Nurse and a Goth; Laura Sherratt covers Mutius, Valentine, a Goth and a Guard; David Dunford is Aemilius and a Tribune; Dan Hogarth plays the Clown, Caius, a Tribune and a Roman Lord; and Zeus Aartje is Alarbus.
