Free, research-informed board game session hosted by Dr Kate Carruthers Thomas to explore career development in higher education.
The HE Career Game comes to the East Midlands Conference Centre on Wednesday 2 December, from 5:15 to 6:15 pm. It's a one-hour session hosted by Dr Kate Carruthers Thomas of Birmingham City University, and it's free to attend.
The whole thing is built around a research-informed board game adapted from Snakes and Ladders. It was designed and produced as part of a BA/Leverhulme-funded project called Playing The Career Game: Using game-based methodology to critically consider the effectiveness of targeted career initiatives. The game is currently on tour around six UK universities, and this is the Nottingham stop.
On the board, the game looks at the structural and individual factors that shape career development and progression in higher education. It's framed as a relaxed session, described as a conference cool-down or warm-up, so it's more of a low-pressure way to talk through the things that actually affect how a career in HE moves forward, rather than a formal workshop. You play through the game and, in the process, get to think about those factors in a way that's a bit more tangible than just talking about them in the abstract.
