Evening of recognition, entertainment and networking celebrating the achievements of Black individuals across Nottingham and the East Midlands during Black History Month.
The Black Achievers Awards return to Nottingham on Saturday 31 October, hosted at the Crowne Plaza Nottingham on Wollaton Street. It's part of Black History Month 2026, and the night is built around recognising the achievements, leadership and contributions of Black individuals across the community. This year's Black History Month theme is 'Honouring Our Communities', and the awards sit right inside that.
There's a bit of history to the night. Merlita Bryan started it back in 2011 as the Black Achieving Males Awards (BAM), with the aim of promoting the achievements of the BME community and putting positive Black role models on display for the local area to see. Since then, it's grown to honour both Black men and women across Nottingham and the East Midlands. Its reach has expanded well beyond the city, now covering Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Warwickshire.
Merlita Bryan herself is a well-known figure in the city: she served as Lord Mayor of Nottingham in 2013-2014 and as Sheriff of Nottingham in 2022. She'll be presenting this year's awards, too. The evening combines recognition with entertainment and networking, so it's as much about the people in the room as it is about the awards themselves.
