Screening of the 1995 horror anthology 'Tales from the Hood', directed by Rusty Cundieff, as part of Broadway Cinema's Horror Noire season.
Broadway Cinema is screening Tales from the Hood on Saturday 24 October, as part of their Horror Noire season. It's a 1995 horror anthology directed by Rusty Cundieff, and it runs for 97 minutes.
The film is built around Clarence Williams III as Mr Simms, an eccentric funeral director who takes four teenage drug dealers on a tour of his mortuary. Along the way, he tells them a string of terrifying cautionary tales, each one a separate story within the larger frame. It came out during the boom of independent Black cinema in the 1990s, and it's a politically angry film, told in a satirical and brutal way. One of its most noted sequences is among the earliest horror-film depictions of police brutality as a system rather than an individual act, so it's as much about the world it's set in as the ghosts and ghouls it conjures.
