Free 18+ gig by Derby country rock and Americana five-piece Southbound at Billy Bootleggers Nottingham.
Southbound are playing Billy's (Billy Bootleggers Nottingham, formerly Percy Picklebackers) on Saturday 7 November, with doors opening at 14:00. They're a five-piece electric and acoustic combo from Derby, and they've built a name as one of the Midlands' favourite Country Rock and Americana bands. Every member is a multi-instrumentalist, and the group was previously voted Mick Moonshine's band of the year.
Their set draws on more than 75 years of American roots music, and they cover and reinterpret material from a wide range of artists. You'll hear names like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis, and the Everly Brothers alongside Flatt and Scruggs, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and the Grateful Dead. They also pull from Old Crow Medicine Show, Eilen Jewell, Lucinda Williams, BR549, and Wayne Hancock, and they describe their approach as always aiming to get the audience dancing.
It's a long list of influences to work through, and the mix of electric and acoustic sets them apart from a standard country act. With five multi-instrumentalists on stage, they can shift between the stripped-back sound of the Everly Brothers and the fuller, electric side of Creedence or the Dead without needing to change the line-up. The set is 18+, so it's an afternoon for the adults rather than a family outing.
