Self-guided audio tour through Nottingham's sandstone caves and historic sites, with twelve stops across 2.9 kilometres.
Secrets & Stories of Nottingham: An Immersive Journey kicks off on Wednesday 14 October at Nottingham's City Of Caves, Drury Walk, Upper Level, Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, NG1 7LS. It's a self-guided audio tour delivered through the free AudaTours app, so you're in charge of the pace rather than following a guide around.
The experience takes you beneath the city's busy streets and into the City Of Caves, a network of sandstone tunnels, merchant houses and historic sites that sits right alongside the National Justice Museum. There's about half an hour of narration in total, and once you've downloaded it, it works offline, so you can stop and linger as long as you like. The route runs across twelve stops and covers some 2.9 kilometres, digging into local scandals and historical mysteries that most of us walk over every day without knowing they're there.
Among the stories you'll come across is why Severn's Building had to be rebuilt piece by piece like a medieval puzzle, who vanished among the damp echoes of the caves, and how an entire courtroom fell through the floor during a trial at the National Justice Museum. The audio is narrated by AudaTours guides drawing on verified historical sources, so it's based on the real record rather than just local legend. One thing to keep in mind is that no building entry is included, so you'll be seeing the sites from the outside rather than heading inside them.
