Guided walk across the skywalk of Bennerley Viaduct, Britain's longest iron viaduct, over the Erewash Valley.
Bennerley Viaduct is running a guided skywalk tour on Saturday 31 October, starting at 10:00 from the Bennerley Viaduct Visitor Centre. It's a guided walk across the top of the viaduct, taking about an hour and a half to two hours.
For context, Bennerley is Britain's longest iron viaduct, a grade II* listed piece of Victorian engineering and one of only two wrought-iron viaducts left in the UK. It stands 18 metres above the Erewash Valley, stretching 1,400ft across. It was rescued by a grassroots group of Friends and reopened for cycling and walking, and it now carries a quarter-mile-long skywalk that's accessible to all. Below the deck is a hidden world of iron girders and rivets that's become home to plenty of wildlife, with the surrounding habitats shaped by volunteers. The organisers call it the 'Iron Giant of Ilkeston and Awsworth'.
The visitor centre houses an exhibition on the viaduct's history and a café serving a locally sourced menu. The walk itself is moderately challenging, with uneven pathways and some steps, so keep that in mind before you set off. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads, and there are toilets and refreshments on-site.
