Dub pioneer Scientist brings his blend of performance art, music and experimental soundscapes to the Metronome in Nottingham.
Scientist plays Metronome on Wednesday 24 February, part of a UK tour that takes him through Leeds, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Leamington Spa. The Nottingham date is the only one in the East Midlands, so it's the one to keep an eye on if you're around here.
If you're not familiar with the name, Scientist is a King Tubby protégé who helped pioneer the dub genre in the late 1970s at Studio One, and later became the principal engineer at Channel One. He put out a string of classic albums in the early 1980s: Scientist meets the Space Invaders, Scientific Dub, Scientists wins the World Cup, Scientist Encounters Pac-Man, Scientist and Jammy Strike Back and Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires. Five songs from those records ended up on the K-Jah radio station in the 2001 video game Grand Theft Auto 3, so there's a good chance you've heard his work without even knowing it.
This isn't a standard gig, either. The show is billed as an imaginative blend of performance art and music that combines theatrical elements with sonic exploration, creative storytelling and experimental soundscapes. It's as much about the performance as it is about the music, so it's a bit different from what you'd expect from a dub set.
