African Head Charge, the pioneering dub and experimental percussion project founded by Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah and Adrian Sherwood, plays Metronome with Gaudi and DJ Earthpipe.
African Head Charge play Metronome on Friday 30 October, with support from DJ Earthpipe. The main set features the Italian producer and multi-instrumentalist Gaudi, who has worked with Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Steel Pulse and The Orb.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, it's worth knowing where they come from. African Head Charge is a dub and experimental percussion project founded in London in 1981 by master percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, alongside the legendary underground producer Adrian Sherwood. While they formed in London, the sound is rooted in Jamaican and West African rhythmic traditions, and they became the most popular act to emerge from Sherwood's On-U Sound Records. Over the years they've put out a string of psychedelic dub albums, including Environmental Studies (1982), Drastic Season (1983), Off the Beaten Track (1986) and Songs of Praise (1991).
For a long time they refused to play live, their hyper-mixed studio compositions proving difficult to reproduce on stage. They eventually did start touring, and later recorded In Pursuit of Shashamane Land (1993) and Akwaaba (1995). Now celebrating 45 years, the London collective has made 13 albums and played everywhere from Glastonbury to Australia and New Zealand. The live show fuses djembes, guitars, drums, keys and vocals with heavy electronic sampling.
