Exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Quilla Constance of large-scale oil paintings, carnivalesque-punk costumes and live works exploring cultural identity.
Quilla Constance brings Activating Intersections to the New Art Exchange on Saturday 16 January, an exhibition that pulls together several different strands of their practice in one room. Constance is an interdisciplinary artist and television personality whose work moves between painting, costume and live performance, and this show puts those things side by side rather than keeping them separate.
The centre of the exhibition is a major commission of large-scale oil paintings, shown alongside carnivalesque-punk costumes and live works. Those sit next to curated video work and archival material, so you'll see the finished pieces alongside the records and moving images that go with them. It's a fair amount to take in at once, and the different formats—the paintings, the costumes, the video—all share the same space.
Constance describes the work as exploring cultural identity and artistic practice across a range of mediums, and that's exactly what's on display: the same themes worked through painting, costume and performance. The costumes, described as carnivalesque-punk, sit alongside the oil paintings, and the live works bring the performance element into the mix. The video and archival material add another layer, giving you a look at the process and the context behind the finished pieces.
