Free drop-in family activities inspired by the gallery's exhibitions, with Wednesday afternoons as lower-stimulation Sensory Sessions for neurodivergent children and their families.
Nottingham Contemporary is running family activities throughout the October half term, from 20 to 29 October. They're drop-in workshops held in The Space, the gallery's large ground-floor area, and they're led by Play & Learn Facilitators. The sessions take their cues from the exhibitions on the walls, with sensory toys and books on hand to get things started.
Wednesday afternoons are a bit different: they're reserved for Sensory Sessions, which run from 1pm to 3pm. These are lower-stimulation sessions for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and neurodivergent children and their families. They keep visitor numbers down, lower the sound levels, dim the lighting, and provide extra rest spaces, so it's a quieter, calmer environment if that's what your family needs.
Beyond the sensory sessions, the workshops run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with two slots each day: 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm. The activities also form part of the Robin Hood Adventure Trail by It's in Nottingham, a free city-centre mission, so you can work them into a bigger day out. The gallery is a Breastfeeding Welcome venue, with Changing Places facilities and staff trained in First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid.
