Informal meetup run by the Retro Bits and Bytes Collective to show off projects, troubleshoot vintage hardware and discuss early personal computing code.
Reviving Classic Code and Silicon Dreams is on at 63 Abbot St on Sunday 1 November, from 19:00. It's run by the Retro Bits and Bytes Collective, and it's an informal meetup for anyone with an old machine gathering dust in the attic or just a curiosity about how software used to be built. The whole thing is an open space to show off projects, troubleshoot vintage hardware and talk through the logic behind the code of the early days of personal computing.
That's the core of it: a room that puts seasoned engineers who cut their teeth on assembly language alongside people just starting to tinker with emulators. If you've spent your life in a terminal, you'll find plenty to talk about; if you're just getting into the old stuff, there's plenty to learn. The focus is as much on the hardware as the software, so it's not just about the code on the screen but the machines it ran on.
One of the better bits is that you can bring your own equipment along and get it running on the night. If you've got a machine that's been silent for years, this is a good place to try and wake it up with a few other people around who might have seen the same problem before. It's as much about the tinkering as the talking.
