Literary launch party for the second issue of the New Nottingham Journal, with readings from contributors Jo Shapcott, Benjamin Myers, Camilla Grudova, Dean Atta and Hamid Ismailov.
Waterstones on Bridlesmith Gate is hosting the launch party for the second edition of the New Nottingham Journal on Tuesday 24 November, starting at 6:30 PM. The journal is the city's own literary magazine, which got off the ground last year via Kickstarter with support from Arts Council England and a range of Nottingham partners. Its first print run sold out, and this second issue brings together a wide-ranging set of writers.
The evening is built around readings from the contributors. Jo Shapcott, twice winner of the National Poetry Competition, and Benjamin Myers, author of The Gallows Pole and Cuddy, will both be reading. They're joined by Camilla Grudova, one of Granta's Best of Young British Novelists; BAFTA-winning screenwriter Dean Atta, author of The Black Flamingo; and the exiled Uzbek novelist Hamid Ismailov. Editor Andrew Tucker Leavis will also say a few words. Between them, that's five writers reading their own work in one night.
Inside the issue, there's more than just those names. It features the first English appearance of a short story by Sadegh Hedayat, the Iranian modernist behind The Blind Owl, translated by Niloufar-Lily Soltani, alongside new work from writers in the city and black-and-white photography and illustrations. The issue is supported by Bromley House Library, and the launch evening is organised by Waterstones Nottingham.
