Free guided walkthrough of the exhibition 'Sarah Cunningham: Midnight Sun' with artist Martin Clarkson, exploring the work of the late British painter Sarah Cunningham.
Martin Clarkson is leading a guided walkthrough of Sarah Cunningham: Midnight Sun at Nottingham Contemporary on Wednesday 4 November, from 1pm to 2pm. It's a chance to walk through the exhibition with him and hear how the work comes together.
The show itself is the first institutional solo exhibition and the largest presentation of works to date by the late British artist Sarah Cunningham (1993–2024), whose work returns to the city where she was born and raised. She looked for the essential and the alive through imaginary wildernesses and fluid forestscapes, drawing on science fiction literature, art history, ecology and personal references. Her practice was an unusual, nocturnal one that estranged her limbs and thoughts from systematic movements, and the resulting works dwell in darkness only to culminate in the dawn chorus. She shaped layers of paint into fluid motion, creating landscapes as scenes of possibility and portals into other worlds.

It's curated by Katie Simpson and Niall Ó Faircheallaigh, with Lisson as headline supporter. The walkthrough opens up the exhibition, so it's a good way to get a handle on the work if you're seeing it for the first time. The session runs from 1pm to 2pm on Wednesday 4 November at Nottingham Contemporary, and it's free, though donations are welcome.
