Stand-up show by comedian Michael Akadiri, who takes the stage to fight the 'uncle' label in his new show Don't Call Me Uncle!
Michael Akadiri brings his new show Don't Call Me Uncle! to Canalhouse on Thursday 5 November, starting at 18:40 on the Main Stage. It's his latest outing after two hit UK tours, and the title comes from a very specific place. Akadiri is in his early thirties and works as a junior doctor, but he was recently called 'uncle' in public — a term usually reserved for elders — and he's been spiralling ever since. The set finds him fighting that allegation and weighing up the gap between perception and reality, all while working in his trademark sharp wit and politically punchy anecdotes.
There's a fair bit of ground to cover here. He's a doctor, a husband, and a father, and he wears all those hats across the show. The comedy comes from the friction between them, and the 'uncle' thing is just the spark that sets it off. Chortle has called him 'hugely entertaining' and The Guardian described his work as 'politically punchy', and both fit what he does: smart, fast-paced stand-up that doesn't shy away from a point of view.
He's not new to the circuit. He's been on Comedy Central LIVE, ITV's Stand Up Sketch, and Channel 4's Stand Up to Cancer, and you've heard him on Capital Xtra's Breakfast Show, LBC, and BBC Radio 4's Loose Ends. He's also toured as support for Jason Manford. On the awards front, he won the Komedia New Comedy Award and the Comedian of Medicine Award at the Haags Comedy Festival, and he's a NextUp. This is his latest tour, so it's new material coming to Nottingham.
