Live show by the five-piece soul band Mamas Gun, led by singer-songwriter Andy Platts, at Peggy's Skylight.
Mamas Gun play Peggy's Skylight on Wednesday 2 December, their first Nottingham date in a while. They're a five-piece British band whose sound sits between blue-eyed soul and the black music soul tradition, with echoes of Marvin Gaye, Bobby Caldwell, Bill Withers, Lewis Taylor and Sly Stone. If you've come across them before, that's the territory they've stayed in: soulful, melodic, and built on a strong vocal.
Singer-songwriter Andy Platts formed the band in 2007, and he's the one who's written hits for Take That and James Morrison, as well as for high-profile stars in South Korea and Japan. Since 2015, he's also been half of the yacht-rock duo Young Gun Silver Fox alongside producer Shawn Lee. The band found early international success with a radio-friendly soul-pop sound and has released five full-length albums, with the self-produced Golden Days in 2018 marking a major turning point. Their latest album, DIG!, is billed as their most accomplished to date, and it's drawn praise for the band's harmonies.
On the night, the line-up is Andy Platts on vocals, Terry Lewis on guitar, Dave Oliver on keyboards, Cameron Dawson on bass and Chris Boot on drums. It's a full band on stage, so you'll hear the whole thing working together rather than just a singer and a backing track.
