A comedy and clown performance by Lee Kennedy, part of the Nottingham Comedy Festival's Wormhole Weekend.
Lee Kennedy brings Clown Church to Fisher Gate Point on Saturday 7 November, as part of the Nottingham Comedy Festival. It's a solo show that sits somewhere between stand-up and clowning, and it's one of the acts in Wormhole Weekend, a stretch of the festival presented by Club Wormhole that gathers some of the country's best alternative comedy.
Kennedy is a clown, an improviser, and an increasingly un-lapsed Catholic from the North of Ireland who describes Clown Church as turning laughter and chaos into a ritual. He talks about searching for something that's sacred and profane, welcoming and healing and hilarious all at once. It's not a traditional comedy set; the title points to the way he plays with the idea of a service, with the room becoming the church and the performance taking the place of the liturgy. Critics have praised it for its pathos, sincerity and connection, and have noted that he captures the same energy as Viggo Venn.
The show runs for an hour and is recommended for ages 12 and over. It's part of Wormhole Weekend, which is presented by Club Wormhole as part of the wider Nottingham Comedy Festival, a weekend billed as gathering some of the country's best alternative comedy shows. If you're into the more off-beat side of the festival, this is one of the slots to keep an eye on.
