Folk singer-songwriter Kirsty Merryn returns with new material and songs from her albums, supported by Chris Avery of Filkin's Drift, at Peggy's Skylight.
Kirsty Merryn plays Peggy's Skylight on Sunday 13 December, her first folk night in the city in three years. She's a singer-songwriter who works with piano and voice, and the set will be a mix of new material and songs from her two acclaimed albums, Our Bright Night and She & I. The night is presented by Folkroom at Peggy's, an independent jazz club in the heart of Nottingham founded by musicians Rachel Foster and Paul Deats, who perform together as Me & Mr Jones.
It's a return to the folk scene after a three-year break, so the new songs will be a good place to start. Merryn describes her music as anchored in the folk tradition but shaped by jazz and classical influences, and she performs both original and traditional songs. That crossover is part of why she's such a singular presence on the UK folk scene — she doesn't stick to one lane, and the piano gives her a different kind of room to move in than the guitar-led sets you usually find in folk clubs.
She's worked with some big names along the way. Steve Knightley of Show of Hands took her on their 2017 tour of UK cathedrals and featured her song 'Forfarshire' on their 2019 album Battlefield Dance Floor. She's also recorded with The Ciderhouse Rebellion and BBC Folk Award winner Ben Walker, so she's well-connected across the folk world even when she's stepping out on her own. The support for the night comes from Chris Avery of Filkin's Drift, who'll open for her.
