Two evening shows of jazz and Brazilian music by singer-pianist Joanna Eden and her quartet at Peggy's Skylight in Hockley.
Joanna Eden returns to Peggy's Skylight on Saturday 24 October, this time with her quartet. She's a singer-pianist from Saffron Walden, and the quartet adds bass, guitar and drums to the mix. Time Out once described her as 'The UK's answer to Diana Krall and Norah Jones rolled into one', and Mojo called her work 'melody, mystery and bite'. Sam Smith, who's picked up a Grammy and an Oscar, calls her 'the reason I sing' and names her as his mentor.
Her compositions draw on Joni Mitchell and Stephen Sondheim, but there's a South American groove running through them, picked up on her frequent trips to Brazil and Uruguay, where she's performed, written and recorded. The quartet leans on Uruguayan bassist Andrés Lafone, a pioneer of the UK Latin/Jazz scene with more than 50 albums to his credit and collaborations with Airto Moreira, Snowboy, Jon Cleary, Basia, Matt Bianco, Da Lata, Negrocan, Monica Vasconcelos and Mike Lindup. Guitarist Guillermo Hill and drummer George Double are also regulars on the jazz and Brazilian scenes, having played alongside Ola Onabule, Mica Paris, Tom Jones, Art Themen, Jack Jones and Dame Shirley Bassey.
