Night of women, trans and non-binary performers with a 7pm open jam, an 8.30pm showcase and headliners Marie and Maia Sudha.
Fem Frequencies is at The Grove on Thursday 22 October, a night built around women, trans and non-binary performers. It's not just a showcase, though; the evening starts early with a 7pm open jam session for women, trans and non-binary people, which doubles as a chance for musicians to get to know each other and play together. From 8.30pm, the focus shifts to a showcase of women, trans and non-binary performers, before the headliners take over at 9pm.
Those headliners are Marie, an RnB singer-songwriter from Dudley, and Maia Sudha. Marie started releasing music in 2021 after setting up a DIY home studio during Lockdown, and her debut single Why was picked up by BBC West Midlands and BBC Introducing. Maia Sudha is an emerging vocalist drawing on pop, RnB and soul, and has just released her first single, Inconsistent. Between them, the headlining slot covers a fair bit of ground across those styles.
The jam session at the start is a good way to see how the night works if you're a musician yourself. The whole thing is an inclusive space for women and femmes to collaborate and foster community and creative exchange, so it's as much about what happens off-stage as what happens on it.
