Screening of Paweł Pawlikowski's film 'Fatherland', about Nobel laureate Thomas Mann returning to a divided post-war Germany.
Fatherland is screening at Broadway Cinema in Hockley, with the first showing on Friday 23 October and further screenings on Sunday 25, Monday 26, Tuesday 27, Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October. It's a 12A film, 82 minutes long, and it's presented in English, German, French and Russian with English subtitles.
Set in the summer of 1949 at the height of the Cold War, the story follows Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika, an actress, writer and rally driver played by Sandra Hüller, who you might recognise from The Zone of Interest. The two set off on a challenging road trip in a black Buick across a ruined Germany, travelling from US-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. Mann is returning home after sixteen years of exile in the US, and along the way he has to face not only a divided fatherland but a deep fracture within his own family.
Behind the camera is director Paweł Pawlikowski, who picks up where he left off with his award-winning Ida and Cold War. Through the trip, he looks at identity, family, love and guilt amid the turmoil of post-war Europe. It's a relatively short film, coming in at 82 minutes, and the multilingual dialogue is subtitled throughout.
