Regional premiere of Emteaz Hussain's play about the sexual exploitation of young girls in northern towns, directed by Esther Richardson.
Expendable runs at Nottingham Playhouse from Thursday 4 to Saturday 13 March 2027. It's a play by East Midlands writer Emteaz Hussain, directed by Esther Richardson, and it's the regional premiere of a production that first opened at London's Royal Court Theatre in 2024. This is the first time it's being staged outside London.
The story follows two sisters dealing with the fallout on their community when the men around them become embroiled in a sexual abuse scandal. It's set against the backdrop of hundreds of young girls exploited by predatory men in northern towns between the 1990s and 2010s, and it puts the spotlight on the voices of Pakistani women that often get overlooked in those accounts. Hussain is a local writer, and this is his latest work after Still Life here at the Playhouse and Crongton Knights at Pilot Theatre.
It's part of the Playhouse's spring summer 2027 programme, which also includes the world premiere of Amanda Whittington's Be My Baby: The Musical and a co-production of Romeo and Juliet with the English Touring Theatre, Leeds Playhouse and the Royal Lyceum Edinburgh. The age guidance for Expendable is 14+.
