One-man show by David Shopland inspired by The Breakfast Club, in which the forgotten sixth student relives the detention scene at a high school reunion.
Don't You Forget About Me comes to Nottingham Playhouse on Friday 29 January 2027, starting at 8:00pm. It's a one-man show written and performed by David Shopland and directed by Roann Hassani McCloskey, and it's built around a gap in one of the most famous scenes in cinema: the detention room in John Hughes' The Breakfast Club.
Shopland plays the forgotten sixth student who was in that room on a Saturday morning in suburban Illinois, and the play finds him reliving those events at a high school reunion. It's described as part motion-picture homage and part existential crisis, using 1980s pop culture to ask how the films and music of our childhood shape who we become. The show is a funny, heartfelt trip through teenage memories and the power of nostalgia, and it runs for 60 minutes.
Shopland is also the Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Fake Escape, an award-winning international touring theatre company based in South London and established in 2013. He returned to the stage following his 2023 hit Raising Kane, and Don't You Forget About Me has since picked up a WhatsOnStage Award nomination and several OffWestEnd Award nominations. It played the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe before heading out on a tour of 20 UK venues between November 2026 and April 2027, with the Nottingham Playhouse date falling toward the end of that run.
