High-octane jazz in the Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli mould, with Andy Aitchison on violin, at Peggy's Skylight.
Djanco are playing Peggy's Skylight on Sunday 18 October, with Andy Aitchison on violin. It's an afternoon set, so you can be home by tea time rather than out until the early hours.
The band draws on Stephane Grappelli, Artie Shaw and bebop greats like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and critics describe it as high-octane, superb quality jazz in the Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli mould. The live show is built on the virtuosic interplay between Aitchison's violin and Thom Whitworth's guitar, full of playful exchanges and cheeky chat with the crowd; Aitchison himself is described as being up there alongside the leading swing jazz violinists of all time. The full line-up for the day is Thom Whitworth on guitar, Andy Aitchison on violin, Rich Whitworth on double bass and Robbie Caswell-Jones on rhythm guitar.
The afternoon is rounded off with food at Peggy's Skylight, a Hockley venue founded by jazz musicians Rachel Foster and Paul Deats, who perform as Me & Mr Jones. The room was inspired by the Jazz Ambassadors — Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong — who toured the Middle East, and was created as a home for the region's jazz and blues musicians. Its interiors run from a 1930s tea room at the shop front to a Middle Eastern-styled auditorium, with a menu drawing on Lebanon, North Africa and Cyprus.
