Award-winning open mic night at Canalhouse pairing established comedians testing new material with new acts cutting their teeth on the circuit.
Canalhouse Comedy Night is back at Canalhouse on Monday 9 November, one of the venue's regular mid-week spots. It's run by NCF Comedy, the same team that puts on comedy across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and stages the annual Nottingham Comedy Festival, which has run since 2009 and brings together every variety of comedy across the city for nine days in November.
The night is the venue's award-winning new act and new material night, and the format is pretty straightforward: it pairs established names road-testing new material with newcomers cutting their teeth on the circuit. The established comics use the room to try out bits before they go into a polished show, and the newcomers get their first proper looks in front of a crowd. It's billed as a chance to spot the next big star early on, and the room has a long list of names that have come through it, including Scott Bennett, Seann Walsh, Zoe Lyons, Laura Lexx, Pierre Novellie, Carl Hutchinson, Alfie Moore, Maisie Adam, Daniel Foxx, Chloe Petts, Josh Jones, Helen Bauer, Grace Petrie, Phil Ellis and Stevie Martin.
It's picked up its fair share of recognition over the years, too. It took Best Small Club at the Midlands Comedy Awards in 2021 and 2018, Best Open Mic Night in 2016 and Best East Midlands Open Mic Night in 2015. The night runs every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, so if you miss this one, there's usually another one coming up soon.
