World premiere of Amanda Whittington's musical, adapted from her play about the injustice of forced adoption, set in 1964.
Be My Baby: The Musical opens at Nottingham Playhouse on Monday 31 May, running through to Saturday 26 June 2027. It's the world premiere of Amanda Whittington's musical adaptation of her own play, which she wrote early in her career and has since become a modern classic over the last 25 years. The story is set in 1964 in a Nottinghamshire town and follows four young women sent to St Saviours, a home for unmarried mothers, to give birth in secret. There, they bond over their shared love of girl groups.
The score leans on a hit list of 1960s songs, with 'Be My Baby', 'Alfie', 'The Locomotion', 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' and 'I Only Want to Be With You' among them. Whittington, who also wrote Fishermen's Friends: The Musical and Ladies Day, has been developing the show with Nottingham Playhouse artistic director Adam Penford for some years. Penford has noted that the story remains strikingly relevant while the narrative of government forced-adoption policy is still in the news.
