James Graham's play about Albert Einstein, starring Griff Rhys Jones, as a family reunion turns into a clash of views on evil, war and the atomic bomb.
Albert's Boy runs at Nottingham Playhouse from Tuesday 23 to Saturday 27 March 2027, as part of the venue's spring season. It's written by James Graham, with Griff Rhys Jones playing Albert Einstein and Joe Absolom as Peter, and Terry Johnson directing.
Graham is one of the country's most celebrated playwrights and screenwriters, with This House, Ink, Dear England, The Crown, Quiz and Sherwood to his name. Albert's Boy is his second play, and his other, Punch, won the 2026 Olivier Award for Best New Play. The Playhouse opens its spring season with Punch returning, so this is the second Graham show on the bill.
The play is billed as funny and achingly moving. It starts with a warm reunion that turns into a collision of opposing beliefs about evil, war and the atomic bomb when a family friend, newly released from a Chinese POW camp, arrives. It leaves Einstein wrestling with whether he did the right thing.
