Free workshop for 15-25 year olds led by artist and witch Wingshan to make a portable personal altar inspired by Sarah Cunningham's paintings.
Wingshan is running a workshop at Nottingham Contemporary on Saturday 7 November, from 2pm to 4pm in Studio 2. The session is called Pocket Altars - Ritual as Practice, and it's all about making a portable personal altar you can carry around with you.
The workshop takes its starting point from the paintings of Sarah Cunningham, who is exhibiting at the gallery at the time. Her work looks at landscapes and the natural world, and that's the thread Wingshan pulls on here. You'll be working with pre-made padded textile altars, paint, hand-stitching, herbs, fabric and small found materials to build your own. Along the way, the conversation opens up to things like the seasons, the elements, animism and cyclical change.
Wingshan is a Nottingham-based artist, curator and witch. Her practice revolves around ritual, mythology, world-building and collective making, and she draws on folklore, magical practices and personal mythologies. She works across participatory performance, games, workshops, objects and installation, and also works as an artist development curator and mentor.
